Like David, I find it rather incredible to think about God thinking about me. To think that God put so much thought into forming me in my mother’s womb & designing my physiology, psychology, personality and temperament and also has my days planned out in his book (13-16) boggles my mind. “Plans” is one of the ways the word “thoughts” can be translated in verse 17 (as well as in verse 2, where David said Yahweh “discerned” this thoughts or plans or motives from far away). God’s past work in me is wonderful (14), his present thoughts toward me are innumerable, even his future plans for me are incredible. Such astonishment is similar to what David wrote in Psalm 40:5, “You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you.” British commentator Derek Kidner wrote on that passage, “The past is full of his miracles (wondrous deeds), the future full of his plans …”
Not only are God’s thoughts toward me innumerable, but they are continual or unending. “[When] I awake [in the morning after a night’s sleep] I am still with you” (18b). I may not be thinking about God when I first wake up in the morning, but he’s thinking about me and loving what he thinks, because he can’t have a wrong or unrighteous thought toward me. Just think about that! Humbling, isn’t it?
