Psalm 131 was written by David, although when in his life is unknown. It sounds a lot like his early years, when he had to cast himself upon Yahweh for his safety, security & survival. Nonetheless, it testifies to his hopeful confidence in the LORD. These 3 short verses easily divide into David’s prayer to Yahweh (1-2) and his plea to Israel (3). Verse 1 describes his humility in that “[his} heart is not lifted up” nor does he roll his eyes at God like those in Proverbs 30:13. Furthermore, David’s humility is seen in that he did not “occupy [himself] with things too great & too marvelous for [him]” (1b). He likely knew Deuteronomy 29:29 that spoke of “secret things” that belong to God. He wrote of such “knowledge” in Psalm 139:6 that he said was “too wonderful” for him, too “high” that he could not attain it. When I occupy myself with things God has not revealed (such as how God’s sovereignty & man’s responsibility harmonize), I become preoccupied with the wrong things, and that often leads to speculation and pride. Romans 11:33-36 keeps me grounded and focused on where my heart & mind really need to focus. “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! … For from him and through him and to him are all things [even things I don’t understand]. To him be glory forever. Amen!”
Verse 2 testifies to David’s contentment with God and his control over himself. He “calmed & quieted” his soul and became like a child who used to restlessly clamor for his mother’s milk; but now he’s content to rest quietly in his mother’s arms or lap, content with her loving presence alone. I need to learn to calm & quiet my soul at times, too, especially in light of multiple current events. I need to rest in God’s loving care and realize that not all of the questions my mind wrestles with will be answered this side of heaven. I don’t need such knowledge, if God has not revealed it. I will rest content with his daily expressions of love and grace. How was David able to gain such contentment? Because he hoped in Yahweh. He confidently trusted Yahweh for the unknown and called Israel to do the same: “O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore” (3). This call goes out to all God’s people everywhere no matter their circumstances.
