To me, the truth that comforts and encourages me the most during this COVID-19 pandemic is “the LORD reigns!” Truly that is something the entire earth should be glad about and rejoice in (1). If the virus was some rogue substance out from under God’s control, we would all need to worry. But since there is not one atom in the universe that is not governed by Almighty God, then we can rest peacefully knowing that “God’s got this!” Even though there is an ominouse sense of mystery & unapproachableness around God, I rest assured that “righteousness & justice are the foundation of his throne” (2). God’s throne is “control central” in the universe. (If you really want to see what it’s like in that control center, read Revelation 4-5.) When “the Lord of all the earth” comes to judge the earth (as Psalm 96:13 tells us), nothing and no one will stand in his way (3-5). Right now, the heavens proclaim his righteousness and all the people [who have eyes to see] see his glory (6). (See Psalm 19:1.) With that knowledge comes a warning to all idolaters (7). But God’s people hear of the Lord’s coming and are glad & rejoice even when Yahweh judges (8), because they understand that he is “most high over all the earth” and “exalted far above all gods” (9). Today I am called to love this sovereign Lord and hate evil. I know he preserves & guards the lives of his saints and triumphs over the wicked (10). God’s light has dawned and joy fills my heart, as I “rejoice in Yahweh” … “and give thanks to his holy name” (11-12) – even for HIS virus.
