Psalm 92 was written & sung “for the Sabbath,” which means rest. So this psalm is very fitting during our stay-at-home time. Am I really resting today in all that God is for me in Jesus Christ? The Jean S. Pigott wrote:
“Jesus, I am resting, resting in the joy of what Thou art;
I am finding out the greatness of Thy loving heart.”
If I am to truly rest, I must learn how “good” it is “to give thanks to the LORD” and “to sing praises to your name, O Most High” (1). I need to begin & end the day with declaring (to myself!) God’s steadfast love and faithfulness (2). Yahweh makes me glad by what HE has done in creation (4). Those “works” are great and represent God’s awesome, wise & “very deep” mind (5). On this April Fool’s Day, the fool doesn’t seem to understand, & indeed cannot understand, the eternal destruction of the wicked despite their temporary success, prosperity & flourishing (5-9). [They are just as vulnerable to the coronavirus as anyone else.] By resting in God & reflecting upon his works of creation and redemption, I get my strength from God with fresh anointing power for each new day (10). Verse 11 reminds me that Jesus saw Satan fall from heaven (Luke 10:18), and I heard about the demise of evil powers by Christ on the cross in the gospel (Colossians 2:15). Verses 12-15 give me much hope and joy, now that I turned 65 this year. Old righteous people can still bear fruit and grow in their old age like palm trees & cedars. How? Because they are “planted in the house of the LORD” & “flourish in the courts of our God” (13). IOW they are rooted in worship and draw near to God. The fruit we bear is the continual declaration to God, ourselves and others “that Yahweh is upright,” … “my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him” (15). As another hymn declares: “Whate’er My God Ordains is Right” (even this COVID-19 pandemic)! (Go here to listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7H4qwj5rpo).
