A.W. Tozer wrote: “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” He wrote that in the context of some thoughts on worship and whether “the worshiper entertains high or low thoughts of God.” In Psalm 94, we read some very “high” thoughts of God. It’s easy to get distracted by what’s wrong in the world and focus on the wrongdoers. So it’s good to shift our focus from man to God, as the psalmist does here twice by referring to Yahweh as the “God of vengeance” (1) and “judge of the earth” (2). So today I will focus on what is written about God here rather than what’s written about the wicked. God is the one who created the ear & eye, so I can rest assured that he hears and sees everything that goes on in this world (9). He who disciplines nations also rebukes them in his own time and way (10a). He teaches mankind knowledge & knows fully every fleeting thought (10b-11). Yahweh will not forsake or abandon his people (14). Yahweh is our help when people rise up against us (16-17). His “steadfast/constant love” holds me up (18). “When the cares of my heart are many, [his] consolations cheer my soul” (19). [Notice consolations is plural. God has many ways of cheering up his people!] Yahweh, my God, has become my “stronghold” & “the rock of my refuge” (22). God is my true “stay-at-home” dwelling place. With all that’s going on in the world today – the good, bad & ugly – I will keep my focus on Jesus Christ and trust that in his time & way he will deal with the wicked. In fact, one day “Yahweh our God will wipe them out” (23). Now THAT’S a high & sobering thought indeed! Not to understand these things reveals how dull & foolish I am (8). So in the meantime, I will rest in the blessing of God’s discipline and the instruction I receive from his word (12). There is no rest like the rest Jesus gives, when we accept his invitation to come to him and learn from him (Matthew 11:28-30).
